UNTIL I GOT TO KNOW MRS MARETTO
Earlier this year, my artwork has been displayed at the Hive Gallery in Los Angeles for the 5th edition of Stitch Fetish, a group show of erotic fiber art curated by Ellen Schinderman.
It did not take too long for Jimmy Emmett to pop in my mind after I read the open call for Stitch Fetish 5.
Jimmy Emmett, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is a lost high school boy from Gus van Sant’s movie To Die For. He is being manipulated by a fiercely ambitious local TV host, Suzanne Stone Maretto, who wants to get rid of her husband, Larry.
Jimmy falls in love with Suzanne and agrees along with his two friends, Lydia and Russel, to free her from the husband she falsely accuses of being abusive.
While Suzanne is sickly obsessing over fame and being on TV — “You’re not anybody in America unless you’re on TV” is her motto — Larry, Jimmy, Lydia and Russel are obsessed with her, and this whole mass of fascination, desire and obsessions appeared to me as a pretty good approach to Stitch Fetish.
My memory of the screening of To Die For in a little informal theatre in Berlin also played a part in this choice. It was the first time I watched the movie, we were a group of 30 maybe 40 people, and I remember pretty well the electricity in the air when Joaquin Phoenix was on screen.
Let’s say that despite the deep, yet moving, naivety of his character and the coldness of this winter night, Jimmy Emmett managed to warm us up brilliantly.
This is how Jimmyquin naturally became the subject of my serie for Stitch Fetish 5, called until I got to know Mrs Maretto.
With this work, I also wanted to create something I had in mind for a while. Besides embroidery I do stopmotion, so it was just a matter of time before I start combining both. Along with the three portraits of Jimmy, the serie includes my very first embroidered animation in the form of a video loop to stick to the idea of obsession.

These three portraits mix two scenes of the movie : the one where Jimmy is fantasizing about Suzanne while watching Rise & Shine, the weather forecast she presents, and a part of his questioning during which he explains : ” I never really gave a rat’s ass about the weather… until I got to know Mrs Maretto. Now, I take it very seriously. If it rains… or there’s lightning or thunder… or if it snows, I have to jack off.”
And last but not least, the until I got to know Mrs Maretto serie is available in the art section of IIWADD! shop.
